Why Pigs Matter

Pigs are intelligent and self-aware animals.

Research has shown that pigs are mentally and socially similar to dogs and chimpanzees, animals that we consider intelligent.

They can learn how mirrors work and will use their understanding of reflected images to work out their surroundings to find hidden food. They can also solve jigsaw puzzles.

As highly social animals, they empathise with each other and are affected by and share the emotional state of other pigs.
