March to Close All Slaughterhouses. 11 March 2017

Sydney’s 4th annual March To Close All Slaughterhouses is here!

WHEN: Saturday, 11 March 2017 @ 12-2pm
WHERE: Martin Place near Macquarie Road

The day was one of solidarity with activists and other compassionate members of the animal rights movement, a day not just of solemn reflection of the suffering of animals, but of celebration and optimism for the progress made by those joining the fight.

Join us on 11 March as we march down the streets of Sydney demanding radical change to the way we treat animals in our society. We will be joined across the country by marches in Adelaide, Canberra, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Hobart!

Be among hundreds chanting, holding banners and handing out leaflets, to inform the community about how to live happy, healthful lives in harmony with animals.

Rally #4. PHOTOS & VIDEOS. #NoAgGag. 8 Aug 2015

Around 200 people attended the #NoAgGag Rally on a sunny Saturday at Sydney Town Hall.

There are no winners in ag-gag laws. They undermine the values of democracy, impedes free speech and transparency. If passed, it means that investigators of animal cruelty will be made criminals while the perpetrators of that cruelty will be protected. It will obscure consumers’ understanding of where their food comes from.

Thank you to our wonderful guest speakers Emmanuel Giuffre (Legal Counsel at Voiceless), Michael Walsh (member of the Animal Justice Party) and Dr Mehreen Faruqi (MP and Animal Welfare spokesperson at NSW Green) for their passion and fight against ag-gag.

We thank all our supporters; in particular, Steven Lewanski, Andy Fawkner and Michael McNally for help out with audio.

Here are some of our favourite photos from the rally. You can see more at Sydney Activism Photography.

Rally #4. #NoAgGag. 8 Aug 2015

#NoAgGag Rally

  • Date: Saturday, 8 August 2015
  • Time: 11.00-12.30
  • Place: Sydney Town Hall. 483 George Street, Sydney
  • Register: Your attendance via our Facebook Event

Ag-gag laws are designed to deter activists and journalists from documenting the suffering of animals in factory farms. In June 2015, a Senate Committee recommended that WA Senator Chris Black’s Criminal Code Amendment (Animal Protection) Bill be passed with a minor change.

If passed, it means that investigators of animal cruelty will be made criminals while the perpetrators of that cruelty will be protected. It will obscure consumers’ understanding of where their food comes from.

Join us to learn more about ag-gag and oppose this backward Bill. A short Q&A session will follow the speeches.

 Guest speakers:

  1. Emmanuel Giuffre, Legal Counsel at Voiceless
  2. Michael Walsh, member of the Animal Justice Party
  3. Dr Mehreen Faruqi, MP and Animal Welfare spokesperson at NSW Greens

The Election

The NSW Election on 28 March 2015 is our chance to vote for a party that is a voice for animals.

Special thanks to guest speakers David Shoebridge (MP, The Greens NSW) and Michael Walsh  (candidate for Newtown, The Animal Justice Party) for sharing their party’s policies on farm animals.

For more information on the each party’s policies and initiatives on animals:

Ag Gag

The ‘Criminal Code Amendment (Animal Protection) Bill 2015’  (also known as ag gag) will criminalise in-depth investigations that expose industry-wide cruelty in factory farms and other industries that use animals for profit. More than ever, we need to be the voice for pigs and other animals.

Rally #2. RSPCA – Where is the justice for pigs? Sydney Town Hall, 13 Dec 2014

A fantastic turnout of 250-300 people to the rally in Sydney demanding justice for the pigs at Wally’s Piggery.

Background (courtesy Little Oak Sanctuary): We are appalled by the withdrawal of the case against Wally and Stephanie Perenc, the operators of Wally’s Piggery. The deplorable conditions in this piggery just outside Canberra were brought to light in August 2012. General community outrage was expressed across the nation. Almost a year to the day after Animal Liberation’s investigation into this travesty of a ‘farm’ was released, the RSPCA NSW laid 53 charges against the operators, including 12 counts of alleged aggravated animal cruelty.

Now, more than 2 years after the initial investigation, RSPCA NSW has dropped ALL charges against the piggery operators. No compelling reason for dropping the charges has been provided by the animal welfare organisation. Indeed, for most of its brief statement about the dismissal of the case it blamed the very activists who brought the case to light. Without these activists, there is little doubt the operators of Wally’s Piggery would be still be farming pigs today. Now, thanks to the dismissal of the case, they can do so again.

This is a catastrophic failure of the legal system to protect the most vulnerable and exploited beings in our society: farmed animals.

We demand answers from the RSPCA on the dismissal of the Wally’s Piggery case.

  • See photos and videos from inside Wally’s Piggery: Aussie Farms
  • Read an analysis of the Wally’s Piggery case: Voiceless

Chris Delforce from Aussie Farms challenged Katrina Hodgkinson (the NSW Minister for Primary Industries) and Steve Coleman (CEO of RSPCA NSW) to a public debate to explain the withdrawal of charges against Wally’s Piggery and how it relates to proposed ag-gag legislation.

Listen to his speech.
